#ONCEMUSICAL Social Media Call

Yesterday we were very kindly invited to a social media call over at the Phoenix Theatre where Once a new musical is being played. Now what’s that you say? Well yesterday we had the pleasure in finding out!

Being the first in the West End to put on such an event the social media call was basically a great opportunity to get up close and personal to the cast of Once. In doing so we had the delight of hearing a few of there songs performed in the show as well as holding a Q and A with the cast.

Having the chance to get up close to the cast and hear what they enjoyed about the show they were performing was a great opportunity. All showed great passion about what they were performing and put up a strong argument as to how they stand out from other West End shows.

When asked about a cast recording all seemed very keen on the idea. It was mentioned by some of the cast that they would like to record some of the songs very first played before the shows actually starts, played while the audience take there seats. It was also confirmed that in no point of the show is anything pre recorded and all is as you see it, live!

For those that are unaware, Once is based on the 2006 film which tells the story of an Irish guy and an Eastern European girl who meet in Dublin. Both musicians, their love affair is told through songs they write for one another in a traditional Irish pub. Just as the film grew a cult following, the musical has drawn audiences to its simple story and charming melodies.

The Broadway production also won a Tony for its set, designed by Bob Crowley. Minimalist in style, it consists of a bar onstage which can be accessed by the audience during the interval. The bar is surrounded by chairs and the actors never leave the stage, instead playing musical instruments when they are not in a scene.

It’s safe to say this new event was a great idea and we for one look forward to more like this!!

2013 Sees lots of comings and goings for West End Theatre land!

So we in the UK and especially London had a lot to celebrate in 2012 what with the Queens Diamond Jubilee and the Olympic Games. It gave people a chance to come together in the community and really show off what was so great about our country.
2013 is looking to be a cracking year for West End Theatre with new productions set to take the stage and some to reappear. We have cast changes, shows extending and I’m sure lots more to look forward to.
We have already seen the arrival of The Book of Mormon at the Prince of Wales Theatre, which has gone down a storm with critics and fans alike. Not long after we had the arrival of Once hitting the stage of the Phoenix Theatre, based on the 2006 film, telling a story of an Irish man and an Eastern European girl that meet in Dublin and go on to share there love for music.
The Harold Pinter Theatre opens its doors this week for Merrily We Roll Along, already having been called a superb production and given 5 stars from The Guardian and winner for best musical 2012 from the Critics Circle Theatre Awards. Not only that but we also have the arrival of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory which is soon upon us, taking up residency at Theatre Royal Drury Lane from May, which I for one cannot wait.
But with all these new productions set to hit the stage it does see the closure of some current shows. Singin’ in the Rain has announced it will close on the 8th June 2013 ahead of its UK tour, Peter and Alice staring Judi Dench at the Noel Coward Theatre and The Audience staring Helen Mirren at the Gielgud Theatre will also see their runs in the westend come to a close.
Rumour has it Miss Saigon may be returning to the stage, where will this be I hear you ask? All will be revealed in good time.
With productions coming and going some are set to stay for 2013 like Thriller at the Lyric Theatre which has recently been extended to March 2014. Thriller opened at the Lyric Theatre in January 2009 and has continued to go on following great critique. Some shows will see cast changes like Wicked, which welcomes back Harriet Thorpe to play Madame Morrible having previously played the role in April 2008 – March 2010, current actress Louise Plowright has sadly withdrawn due to ill health. Harret Thorpe is set to take the role from April 22nd 2013.
Billy Elliot the Musical which is shown at the Victoria Palace is also set for a cast change from May 13th 2013 having opened back in May 2005 and is still going strong.
So it’s safe to say that 2013 has a lot in store for Theatre Land and I cannot wait to see all the comings and goings. Watch this space for further updates, reviews, news, gossip and more.

Classic british musical return to London’s West End in 2013?

In the 1980′s and early 1990′s Britain (thanks to Andew Lloyd Webber and Cameron Mackintosh mainly) set alight the theatre world with worldwide mega hit musicals such as “The Phantom of the Opera” , “Les Miserables” , “Starlight Express” , “Cats” and “Miss Saigon”

These shows travelled all around the world and put musical theatre to the mass public. With “Phantom” and “Les Mis” still playing solidly 25 years the rest of these mega musicals closed in the late 90s or early 2000′s after thousands of performances. Long runners Chicago and Blood Brothers close later this year.

With the world watching Great Britain – it seems revivals of our greta musicals are being planned to come back…

Cats heads out on tour in 2013 and is expected to come back to the West End at the end of the year. Miss Saigon is rumoured to be revivied by Cameron Mackintosh based on a successful production Holland recently opened and finally a smaller production of Starlight Express (but with 3D effects) is being whispered to head to The Phoenix Spring 2013 after a 10 month tour in the UK.

Perhaps these money making musicals from 80′s that helped really boost the theatre economy are being bought back in to do the same thing again 30 years later…!

West End suffers – come back to London!

Almost a week into the seven year hyped “London 2012″ and pictures have stormed the press of venues with empty seats. Like many of those empty Olympic venues, theatres in the West End are facing a similiar situation.

The streets of London are quieter. Tourists seem to be staying in the East (or did the millions of tourists expected actually ever come?) and families with children on school holidays have done what they were told and stayed away from London. What is normally a time of bustling streets packed with day trippers and tourists spending cash in the capital you can navigate your way through the streets with ease.

Our advice – come back to London! Transport systems are fine. Train station are nearly as busy as predicted and the West End isn’t suffering from over crowding.

Take London back, see a show, you’ll probably get a discount on tickets that’s better than normal!

Olympics, will the West End win?

Ever since the announcement of the Olympics hitting London in 2012, everyone has been discussing the effects of this for tourist market and in our industry, if London shows will face gloom or glee.

At the start of the year, Andrew Lloyd Webber stuck it to the papers claiming all his theatres were going to close and the West End would face a blood bath with him predicting all shows would close for the month of August.

As it turns out, all shows are playing, with the exception of Sweeney Todd taking a fortnight break for the first few weeks of August. All theatres have shows in and the age-old theatre stiff upper lipper “the show must go it” seems to be in force.

Defiant as the shows appear to stand, they are concerned. Advances are little over the Summer, leaving the trade to very much be “on the day” Here at London Theatre Bookings, we have thrived on this trade with our some 13 outlets centrally located in London’s West End. Our shops have been serving the London public and tourists for over 40 years, so will be ready to fill those theatres!

news musicals for London Winter 2012 line up – Viva Forever, Bodyguard, Cabaret + more

This week has seen a surge of announcements for new shows opening this Winter 2012 in London’s West End.

It seems producers have held back opening over the Spring/Summer (uncertainties of London 2012 Olympic’s) and have now let rip on bringing in new shows, and its a breath of fresh air!

The first show, late Summer 2012, will be Soul Sister. A transfer from Hackney Empire, the Tina Turner musical will play a 6 month run at The Savoy Theatre from Mid August to end of September 2012. Opening a week later will be the return of Cabaret, starring Will Young and Michelle Ryan. The revival, based on 2006 show, will play for an inital three month booking period.

September will also see Let It Be open at The Prince of Wales theatre (current show Mamma Mia! will transfer to The Novello early September) playing a four month season over the Autumn/Winter. The Beatles musical-concert show played on Broadway last year to great houses and is expected to nicely fill the gap from Mamma Mia!’s transfer to Broadway blockbuster hit The Book of Mormon opening Spring 2013.

Next up is The Bodyguard – the musical. This new screen-to-stage adaptation will open November 2012 at The Adelphi Theatre (Sweeney Todd’s limited season finishes 22nd September) and stars Tony Award Winner Heather Headley who will be singing Whitney Housten’s icon songs such as “I Have Nothing” “Queen of the Night” and the massive hit from the film “I Will Always Love You” – the actress will also play the part Housten played in the film.

The Bodyguard will have stiff competition following today’s announcement that Spice Girl’s musical Viva Forever will open at The Piccadilly Theatre from November 2012, just like The Bodyguard. The show has been in development a long time and has Judy Craymer at the helm who produced Global hit Mamma Mia! around the world to huge success, with most of those productions still playing today. Viva Forever, like Mamma Mia!, will feature the band’s songs woven in to an original book, which has been written by comedienne Jennifer Saunders. Tickets for the show are expected to go onsale end of June. Current Piccadilly Theatre show, Ghost The Musical, is yet to post an official closing notice.

The Bodyguard and now Viva Forever, could have had more competition to attract the similar market with Bridget Jones Diary – The Musical, which was expected to open at The Savoy this Autumn, however this show has been shelved due to Sheridan Smith (who was to play Bridget) walking away from the production for Hollywood.

Another new show is yet to be announced at The London Palladium. The Wizard of Oz is closing 2nd September. Could a Chistmas show go in for the season? Possibly – but word on the street is that Memphis will open at the large theatre. The 2009 Tony Award winning show on Broadway which still plays is thought to play a 4 month run prior to 2013′s premiere of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Direct from Chichester – Kiss Me Kate, the Cole Porter favourite is expected to transfer into the West End. The show is rumoured to head to The Old Vic later this year.

Phew! Here’s to an exciting Winter 2012, leading into 2013. Who said theatre wasn’t alive?!

English comedies come back to the West End in forces

One Man, Two Guvnors; What The Butler Saw; Noises Off and Abigails Party are amongst the hottest tickets currently selling in the West End. All (with the exception of Butler) have played sold out houses at previous venues/seasons and are still doing the trade in what has been deemed a tough year for theatre.

So, why? Is this all to do with nostalgic year of being English for London 2012? Or are we just looking for silly escapism and downright good laugh?

The farce seemed to make a huge come-back last year when James Corden starred at The National in a revision of “One Man, Two Guvnors” which played a sell out run to standing ovations and high critical claim. The show them triumphantly did a sell out run at The Adelphi theatre (a large theatre more commonly used for large scale musicals), after that the original cast took Broadway by storm and a second cast went to The Haymarket theatre where One Man, Two Guvnors still plays on with strong crowds and has extended to January 2013. Whilst One Man grew bigger and bigger, more farce opened in London – “if you can’t get a ticket to the biggest hit of the year, why not try…” seemed to promote these shows well and they enjoyed sell out runs.

Noises Off was revived late 2011 at The Old Vic starring English favourite actress, Celia Imrie. The show was sell out and was quickly booked in for a west end season at The Novello theatre, where it plays to great houses until July when it’s limited West End season ends.

Seeing the farce making somewhat of a comeback, we now have just started previews “What The Butler Saw” which looks to be doing good buisness only a few previews in. Starring another English rose of the stage, Samantha Bond and funny man Omid Dijali.

The final English comedy coming to London perhaps isn’t so farce as more dark. Mike Leigh’s smash hit play “Abigail’s Party” opened early this year at The Menier Chocolate Factory and again, played a sell-out run prompting a West End transfer to replace oddly an  English play (not comedy) that floped hugely, The Kings Speech. That show died very quickly in London – too soon making the leap from screen to stage? or was it just because it wasn’t funny? Who knows! What we do know is Abigail’ls Party will take its place at The Wyndhams booking thru to August 2012 and looks to do good business. Jill Halfpenny tackles the role that we all remember yet another Alison Steadman for.

Whilst on closures, also closing early is “Written on the Heart” – another more serious play to fail in the West End.

Another English comedy, not farce but still a good laugh and often revived, to do well this season was “Hayfever”  which completes its season on June 1st. The Sunshine Boys has also just opened which I’m sure is banking success on this comedy revival happening in London.

It seems the pubic have spoken and declared comedy is what we want! Or maybe as the West End’s current hit musical, Singin’ in the Rain declares - “Make ‘Em Laugh” !!
