her majestys theatre info
This theatre, the fourth on the site, and bearing its fifth name change, was designed in 1896 by C J Phipps. The original theatre built in 1705 by the dramatist-architect Sir John Vanbrugh and named the Queen's Theatre was burnt down in 1789, but rebuilt in 1791 as the King's Theatre. The theatre's sex changes to correspond with that of the reigning monarch and thus it became Her Majesty's in 1837, but again fir intervened and it was destroyed in 1867. In 1877 the Italian Opera House opened only to be demolished 14 years later to make way for the present building. From 1902 it was again called His Majesty's until the accession of Elizabeth II in 1952.
